Why does my M3U8 to MP4 have no sound?

Many streams keep the audio in a separate track, and a tool that only follows the video playlist leaves it behind. Paste the master playlist, the one that lists several qualities, and the matching audio is joined in. We checked this on Apple’s example stream, which is built exactly that way: the MP4 came back at 1080p with its sound.

Can I convert a live stream?

Not while it is live. A live playlist keeps growing, so there is no finished recording to join. Once the broadcast has ended and the site offers it as a replay, paste the replay’s .m3u8 link.

Does it work on DRM-protected streams?

No. Streams from Netflix, Disney+ and other paid services are encrypted with DRM, and we do not get around copy protection for anyone. The same goes for streams that need you to be logged in.

Why did my link stop working?

Many sites sign their stream links so they expire after a few minutes, or only answer requests that come from their own page. Copy a fresh link and convert it straight away. If it still fails, the site limits the stream to its own player, and no outside tool can fetch it.

How long does it take, and how big is the file?

It depends on the length and the quality. In our tests a 2:45 test stream took 40 seconds, and a 10.5-minute 1080p stream took about two and a half minutes and came to 488 MB. Cutting out only the part you need is the quickest way to a small file.

Can I just watch the stream instead?

Why online M3U8 converters say “short videos only”

Most online M3U8 converters run the conversion inside your browser tab. That has two costs. The tab can only fetch the pieces if the stream’s server allows requests from another website, and many do not, so the tool stops at the first segment. And the whole video has to sit in the tab’s memory while it is joined, which is why those tools warn about length and why a phone gives up first.

Here the pieces are fetched and joined on our servers, the way a desktop tool like ffmpeg would do it, and your device only downloads the finished file. Nothing to install and no command line, and the length is limited only by how big a file can be: up to 5 GB free.

Where to find the .m3u8 link

Sometimes a site shows it, or it sits in a playlist file you were given. Otherwise open the page with the video in a desktop browser, open the developer tools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac), choose the Network tab, type m3u8 in its filter and start the video. The requests that appear are the playlists; the first one, often called master.m3u8 or playlist.m3u8, is the one to copy.

If the page is a regular video page on YouTube, Vimeo, X or another big site, you do not need the stream address at all: paste the page link into the URL to MP4 converter and it finds the video itself.
