Direct link or page link: the difference that decides everything

A browser’s video element can play exactly one kind of address: the video file’s own. Open a direct link on its own and the video starts, with no page around it, and the address usually ends in .mp4. That is what this player takes.

Almost every link people copy is the other kind. A YouTube watch page, a Reel, a Google Drive share, a Dropbox share, a Telegram post — each is an HTML page that has a video somewhere inside it, wrapped in a player the site controls. Paste one of those here and there is nothing for the video element to play, which is why other “URL to MP4 players” spin forever on them. When a real MP4 still will not play

“MP4” names the box, not what is inside it. Nearly all MP4s carry H.264 video and AAC audio, and those play in every browser on every device. The exception that matters is HEVC (H.265), which iPhones record by default and which Chrome on Windows and most Android browsers cannot decode: the file opens, the timeline runs, and the picture stays black. Safari plays it because Apple hardware decodes it. Converting to H.264 — the video converter does this — makes one copy that plays everywhere.

Three more reasons, all outside the player’s control: the link has expired or needs a login (the server answers 403 and the video element reports only that it failed); the file was cut short by a broken download and has no index, which a browser cannot repair; or the server sends the file without a video content type, which some browsers refuse. In each case, fetching the file with the converter and playing the result is the reliable route.

Playing an MP4 from your phone or computer without uploading it
