Online, extension or app?

There are three ways to save a video from a website. Each has a place — here is what they are honestly good and bad at.

  • Online (this page)

    Nothing to install, no permissions to grant, works in any browser on any device.

    Needs a public link. It cannot see video that only plays inside a logged-in session.

  • Browser extension

    Can grab some video straight out of a page as it plays, including a few players a link cannot reach.

    Asks to read every site you visit, and video-downloader extensions have a long history of being pulled from stores for adware. Desktop only.

  • Phone app

    Convenient if you download every day.

    Many install from outside the official store, ask for broad storage access and are heavy with ads. Nothing here needs one.

On iPhone, Android or a computer

  • iPhone and iPad

    Open this page in Safari, paste the link and download. The file goes to the Files app, in Downloads — not to Photos. To put it in your camera roll, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Video.

  • Android

    Open this page in Chrome, paste the link and download. The video lands in your Downloads folder and shows up in your gallery like any other video.

  • Windows, Mac and Linux

    Any modern browser works. The MP4 saves to your normal downloads folder and plays in every standard video player.

What won’t work

Worth knowing before you try, so a failed download does not look like a broken tool:

  • Private videos, or anything you have to be logged in to see
  • DRM-protected streaming — Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the like. The video is encrypted.
  • Live streams while they are still live — try again once the broadcast has ended
  • Videos an uploader has restricted to one website (common on Vimeo)

A video that has been deleted is gone from the site it was on — but if the Internet Archive saved it while it was up, the Wayback Machine video downloader can often get it back.
