What is the maximum video quality I can download?

1080p on this page, or the best YouTube has below that. 4K (2160p), where YouTube has it, comes as AV1 in MP4 from the home page.

Why does the audio sometimes come in a separate file?

YouTube serves high-resolution video and audio as separate streams. Our pipeline automatically merges them into a single MP4 — you only ever receive one file.

Why is 4K sometimes not offered?

Above 1080p YouTube publishes only VP9 and AV1, never H.264. This page gives you H.264 at up to 1080p, which plays everywhere. For 4K, paste the link on the home page and pick the 4K option: that is YouTube’s AV1 stream in an MP4, copied untouched, which plays in current browsers and on recent phones and TVs; older players may not open it.

Yes, and they keep their 1080×1920 shape rather than being padded into a widescreen box. Paste the /shorts/ URL as it is; the tracking string the share sheet adds does no harm.

What about members-only or private videos?

Neither works, and not because of a limitation here. YouTube serves members-only videos only to paying members and private ones only to accounts the owner invited, and this tool never asks for your Google login. Unlisted videos work when you have the link.

YouTube to MP4 in practice

YouTube to MP4 saves a video as a self-contained file you can keep, edit or watch without ads or a connection. The tool uses yt-dlp — the maintained successor to youtube-dl, patched within days whenever YouTube changes — grabs the best stream up to 1080p, and packages it as a clean MP4 that plays on any device.

The real use is offline: pull a lecture, a tutorial or a music video down on good Wi-Fi and it plays on a long flight or on a train with no signal. Keep copyright in mind — personal use of your own uploads, Creative Commons or freely shared content is low risk; redistributing copyrighted video is not what this is for. Private and DRM-protected Premium content cannot be extracted.

How it works

How to download YouTube videos as MP4

Copy the YouTube link
Open the YouTube video on its own page and tap Share → Copy link, so the link points at that one video rather than a feed or profile.
Paste the URL into the converter
Paste the link into the input box on this page. The converter automatically recognises YouTube URLs.
Start the MP4 export
Click Convert. Our cloud worker fetches it from YouTube and packages it as MP4.
Download the MP4 file
When the export finishes you get a download link that works for anyone who has it until the file is deleted. The file is deleted from our servers automatically after 2 hours (longer for very large files or with a pass).
