Does the person need a Dropbox account, or do I?

Neither. A share link is designed to be opened by anyone who has it, and the converter fetches the file the same way a browser would. If the owner restricted the link to specific people or set a password, it cannot be fetched.

Why does it say the link is a folder?

Because it is: dropbox.com/scl/fo/… and dropbox.com/sh/… addresses point at a folder, and a folder is not a file. Open it in Dropbox, click the video you want, and use Share → Copy link on that file.

What about a Dropbox Replay link?

replay.dropbox.com pages are review pages for comments and approvals, not files. In Dropbox itself, find the video and copy its share link.

The link stopped working. Why?

The owner may have disabled the link, set an expiry, or added a password; Dropbox also disables links on accounts that hit their bandwidth limit. Ask the owner for a fresh link.

Is the video re-encoded?

This page always returns MP4 with H.264 and AAC, so a MOV or MKV is converted and an MP4 that already uses those codecs is passed through with only the container rewritten. For the file byte for byte as it was uploaded, choose the original option in the picker on the home page.

Can I take several Dropbox videos at once?

Yes. Paste up to 20 share links, one per line, in the bulk tab on the home page and they come back as one ZIP. Each link still has to be a file link, not a folder.

Which Dropbox links can be fetched

A Dropbox share link opens a preview page in a browser, with a player, a comment box and a download button; the file itself sits behind that page. This converter reads the page the way Dropbox’s own download button does and pulls the video out, so you paste the link as it is and do not have to edit dl=0 into dl=1 or hunt for a "direct" address. Links copied from the website, the desktop app and the phone app all point at the same file and all work.

Why an MP4, when Dropbox already lets you download

Dropbox’s download button gives you the file as it was uploaded. Very often that is a MOV from an iPhone, a MKV from a screen recorder or a WEBM from a browser, and the person you forward it to cannot open it, or a TV or an editing app refuses it. Converting on the way down saves that round trip: the MP4 you get here uses H.264 video and AAC audio, which is the one pairing every device plays. If the source already is that kind of MP4, nothing is re-encoded and the file is simply handed on. And when the file is not a video at all, a PDF or a ZIP or a photo, the link to file converter with the original option fetches it unchanged.

How to turn a Dropbox link into an MP4

Copy the file’s share link
In Dropbox, open the video (not the folder it sits in), click Share, then Copy link. From the Dropbox app on a phone, tap the ⋯ menu on the file and choose Copy link. The address ends in dl=0, which is fine.
Paste it above
The converter recognises the Dropbox link and reads the video’s name. A folder or a Dropbox Replay link is turned away with a message rather than a failed job.
