What to expect

The output format decides whether background removal is actually useful to you. PNG supports transparency, so the removed area becomes genuinely empty and the subject can sit on any colour you later place behind it. JPEG has no transparency channel at all, so a JPEG version has to fill that area with something — usually white — and you end up with a white rectangle rather than a cut-out.

Automatic removal is at its best where the subject and background differ clearly in colour, focus or brightness: a person against a plain wall, a product on a white sweep, a pet on grass. It struggles in the places any cut-out struggles — individual strands of hair, fur against a busy background, transparent or reflective objects like glass and eyewear, and any edge where subject and background share a colour.

If an edge comes back rough, the fix is usually at the input rather than the output. A photo with more separation — a step away from the wall, a different background, or better light on the subject — gives the tool far more to work with than any amount of reprocessing the same difficult image.
