Compress a PNG screenshot or graphic into a much smaller JPG that loads faster on the web and fits more comfortably in emails and uploads. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas take whatever colour the file stores under them, often black — use WEBP or PNG itself if you need to keep transparency.
PNG to JPG is almost always about size. A flat UI screenshot or exported graphic that weighs several megabytes as a 24-bit PNG often drops to a few hundred kilobytes as a JPG — the difference between a page that loads instantly and one that stalls on mobile. The trade-off is transparency: any see-through pixels are flattened onto a solid background, white by default.
Reach for this when the image is headed somewhere that rewards small files — an email attachment, a marketplace listing, a CMS with an upload cap, or a blog post you want to score well on Core Web Vitals. Keep the original PNG if the artwork has crisp edges or text you may need to re-export later.
PNG is a lossless image format with full alpha transparency. It is the default for screenshots, logos, UI mockups, and anything with sharp edges or text. PNG files are much larger than JPG for the same photo content — use PNG for graphics and transparent overlays, JPG for photographs.
JPG (or JPEG) is the universal photo format. It uses lossy compression tuned for natural images, giving you small files that look great on screens, social media, and prints. JPG has no transparency layer and progressively loses quality on each re-save, so keep an original archive if you plan to edit further.
