How to Turn a Link Into a File

A link points at something. A file is the thing itself. Most days the difference does not matter, until the page goes down, the post is removed, or you need the video, image or document on your own device to edit, attach or keep. This is how to convert a link to a file in three steps, with nothing to install. It takes about a minute.

Step 1: Copy the link #

Start with the address of the item you want. For a video, that is the page it plays on: a YouTube watch or youtu.be link, a Short, a TikTok, a Vimeo page, a Reddit post, a Facebook or Instagram video. A link with a timestamp in it is fine. For an image or a document, a direct link works best, meaning one that ends in .jpg, .png, .pdf, .mp4 and so on. Those are fetched exactly as they are and converted only if you ask.

A few checks before you copy. The link should open in a normal browser tab without a login. It should point at one item, not a channel, a profile or a search page. Discord attachments are signed links that expire within about a day, so right-click the attachment, choose Copy link, and convert while it is fresh. Google Drive files must be shared as Anyone with the link; paste the drive.google.com/file/d/…/view address. Then open the link to file converter in a new tab.

Step 2: Paste it into the converter #

Paste the address into the box on the converter page. The site reads where the link points and works out what is behind it: a video page, a direct media file, a document. You do not have to tell it. The fetching happens on our servers, not in your browser, so a large video or a slow host does not tie up your connection or fill your phone while it runs.

A link that cannot be fetched is usually one of three things. The content is private or needs a login. It is protected by DRM, which is where the streaming services sit. Or the address is a listing page rather than a single item. A Google Drive file that needs a Google login fails with a message that says so. Fix the link and paste again.

Step 3: Pick a format and download #

Choose what you want back. For a video link, MP4 keeps picture and sound; MP3 keeps only the audio. For an image, JPG or PNG. For a document link, PDF or DOCX. Then press convert. The file is built on our servers and a download button appears when it is ready.

Some specifics, if quality matters to you. MP4 output is H.264 video with AAC audio. The default is 1080p; YouTube sources go up to 4K when the upload has it. MP3 goes up to 320 kbps at 44.1 kHz, and where the source provides a title, artist and cover art, those are written into the file. M4A, WAV and FLAC are available from the picker on the home page. On your phone #

How to turn a URL into a file on a phone has the same answer as on a desktop, because there is no app. Open the site in Safari or Chrome, paste, choose a format, tap convert, and the file is saved to your downloads the same way as anything else from the web. The conversion runs on our servers, so an older phone or a weak signal is not doing the heavy work. One habit that helps: copy the link from the share button of the app you are in, rather than typing it out.
