How to Convert MP4 to MP3 — Free, Online, in 30 Seconds

That two-hour podcast you recorded on video? It's a 1.6 GB file. The lecture you want for your commute is locked inside an MP4. The live cover you keep replaying exists only as a video clip. Every time, you want the sound — not the pixels wrapped around it.

MP4 is a video container; MP3 is just the audio, on its own. Strip the video track out and you get a file a fraction of the size that plays on anything. Here's the 30-second online way, three offline methods, and exactly which one fits your file.

⚡ The 30-second answer

  • What it does: keeps the audio track, drops the video — MP4 in, MP3 out.
  • Fastest fix: an online converter at 320 kbps — done in about 30 seconds.
  • No friction: no install, no account, no watermark.
  • Bulk or sensitive? Use FFmpeg locally — nothing ever leaves your computer.

Why pull the audio out at all? #

An MP4 is a container — it holds a video stream, an audio stream, subtitles, and metadata. If you only want the sound, all that video data is dead weight: it eats storage, burns mobile data, and won't play cleanly on audio-only devices.

Converting to MP3 keeps just the audio. Where it earns its keep:

  • Ripping audio from a recorded Zoom or Teams meeting
  • Pulling music from a downloaded video
  • Turning a video recording into a podcast episode
  • Saving lecture or interview audio for offline listening
  • Shrinking a file enough to email or message it

Reality check: conversion can't add quality the source never had. A crisp recording makes a crisp MP3; a muffled phone mic stays muffled. 320 kbps just means nothing extra is lost on the way out.

Method 1: Free online converter (fastest) #

No install, works on any device — iPhone, Android, laptop. Best for one-off jobs.

1
Open the MP4 to MP3 converter — no sign-up.
2
Drag your MP4 in, or tap to browse. Files up to 2 GB without an account (4 GB signed in).
3
Hit Convert. The worker strips the video and encodes MP3 at 320 kbps.
4
Download your MP3. The upload self-deletes within 2 hours.
✅
Best when: your file is under 2 GB, you convert now and then, and you'd rather not install anything.

Method 2: Desktop software (VLC & Audacity) #

For regular or bulk work, desktop apps skip upload limits and keep everything local. Two free, cross-platform picks.

VLC Media Player is the fastest desktop route:

  1. Open VLC → Media → Convert/Save
  2. Add your MP4, then click Convert/Save
  3. Set the profile to Audio — MP3
  4. Choose a destination file and hit Start

Audacity does the same but adds waveform editing — trim, fade, and clean up noise before you export to MP3. Worth the extra steps only if you actually need to edit the audio.

⚠️
Audacity can't open MP4s until you install the separate FFmpeg for Audacity library from audacityteam.org. Add it before importing, or the file simply won't load.

Method 3: Command line (FFmpeg) #

FFmpeg is the open-source engine behind most converters — LinksConverter included. If you're comfortable in a terminal, it's the fastest and most flexible option, especially in bulk.

Install it first:

  • macOS: brew install ffmpeg
  • Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt install ffmpeg
  • Windows: download from ffmpeg.org, extract, and add to PATH

Then convert a single file:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -ab 320k -ar 44100 -y output.mp3

What each flag does:

  • -vn — drop the video, keep audio only
  • -c:a libmp3lame — use the LAME encoder for clean, portable MP3
  • -ab 320k — 320 kbps bitrate
  • -ar 44100 — 44.1 kHz sample rate (CD quality)
  • -y — overwrite the output if it already exists

Batch a whole folder:

# macOS / Linux
for f in *.mp4; do
  ffmpeg -i "$f" -vn -c:a libmp3lame -ab 320k "${f%.mp4}.mp3"
done
ℹ️
On Windows? Batch the same job in PowerShell — the one-liner is just below.
Get-ChildItem *.mp4 | ForEach-Object { ffmpeg -i $_.FullName -vn -c:a libmp3lame -ab 320k "$($_.BaseName).mp3" }

Which bitrate should you pick? #

Bitrate is how much audio data MP3 keeps per second — higher means better sound and a bigger file. Match it to the content:

BitrateQualitySize (1 hr)Best for
128 kbpsAcceptable~56 MBPodcasts, voice, casual listening
192 kbpsGood~84 MBMusic, balanced size/quality
256 kbpsVery good~112 MBMusic archiving
320 kbpsBest — the default~140 MBHighest fidelity, audiophile use

For 90% of MP4s, a 320 kbps online conversion finishes before you've found the folder to save it in.

Which audio format is right for you? #

MP3 wins on sheer compatibility, but it isn't the only option. Pick by what you'll do with the sound:

🎧 MP3 — the defaultPlays on literally everything, tiny files. Podcasts, music, sharing. Start here.
🔊 WAV — losslessUncompressed, perfect quality, big files. For editing or mastering — use the MP4 to WAV tool.
🎼 FLAC — lossless, smallerFull quality at roughly half a WAV's size. Best for archiving a music library.
🎙️ M4A / AAC — modernSlightly better than MP3 at the same size, but less universal. Handy in the Apple ecosystem.

Wrapping up #

Nine times out of ten, "just get me the audio" is a 320 kbps online conversion in under 30 seconds — no install, no account, no watermark. For bulk jobs or files you'd rather not upload, FFmpeg does the same work entirely on your own machine.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to convert MP4 to MP3 — and is there a watermark?
Yes — LinksConverter is free for up to 60 conversions an hour on the MP4 to MP3 page, no account needed, and no watermark is ever added to the output. The optional Pro pass raises that to 500 an hour and allows bigger uploads.
Does converting MP4 to MP3 lose quality?
Technically yes — MP3 is a lossy format — but at 320 kbps the difference is inaudible in almost every listening situation. Conversion can't improve a poor source recording. If you need lossless audio, use the MP4 to WAV tool or convert to FLAC instead.
Is there a file size or length limit?
Single files up to 2 GB are supported without an account (4 GB if you sign in, free) — enough for a couple of hours of content. Most conversions finish in 10–30 seconds; very large files may take a minute or two. Every upload is deleted after 2 hours.
Are my files kept private?
Yes. Your upload and the MP3 are deleted about 2 hours after the conversion, and conversions are not linked to an account. Every file is scanned with ClamAV antivirus before you download it, except a video or audio file over 1 GB (or one the scan cannot finish), which is delivered unscanned and says so.
